This is a monumental first record for Azul Kechi, one that establishes her as a force to be reckoned with in the modern soul and R&B world. The chemistry between London-based Azul and the Eraserhood team in Philly was strong from the jump. History has shown us that there is something special about this particular strain of London-Philly transatlantic synergy.
EHS delivers classic synth & soul production that channels Isaac Hayes, ESG, J Dilla and much more. Each song began with John and Perla writing and recording an instrumental directly to their reel to reel tape machine. These tracks often began with a hard hitting beat paired with a hypnotic bass line or shimmering analog synth line. Then the song would be sent across the ocean for Azul to unfold the stories in her mind. Over top of a custom-tailored retro futurist sonic architecture, Miss Kechi introduces herself to the world, revealing her inner complexities, unique experiences, and potent observations about the world. Citing Lauryn Hill and Betty Davis as her biggest inspirations, she showcases a commanding attitude and a silky voice that can float over top of any groove. From the swampy soul of “September Blues” and the knocking hip hop bounce of “Don’t Stop” to the strutting boogie of “Four Letter Word” and the suave, sophisticated R&B of “Highs & Lows,” the Celestial Love album showcases Azul’s potent and dynamic range as an artist.
